Every quarter I schedule myself to take an unplugged day. This is a day set aside to recharge. Obviously, it means to unplug from technology like social media, internet and email. But it also means to unplug from the day to day grind.
Last week was my scheduled unplugged day. However, I really didn't have time. It was a busy work week and there was some big stuff going on at the office. However, I decided to take it anyways (at least for part of the day).
It occurred to me that I shouldn't wait until I was on empty to fill back up.
I cannot "pour from an empty cup" so to speak.
So often, we wait until total burn out and overwhelm before we recharge.
Self care is seen as a luxury. It is not. It is preservation. It is necessary. It is maintaining our sense of self. Taking good care of me means that the people in my life get the best of me. I can lead my team. I can lead my family.
Feel like a day to unplug would be impossible?
As Audrey Hepburn said, "Nothing is impossible. The word itself says I'm possible."
Trade childcare with a friend.
Ask your spouse for help.
Get a babysitter.
Block it as an appointment.
Yes, it is possible.
Pick a day. Pick your pace. Slow down. Take deep breaths. Don't run errands and don't be busy. The time to relax is when you don't have time for it.
Anne Lamott said that "Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a minute..including you". Wise words.
