Are You Looking For Life Balance? If you are, then you should stop. It doesn't exist and it wouldn't be that great if it did. Now I'm not saying that you should accept a life of overwhelm. I'm just saying that balance is fictitious.
What you want isn't balance. You want a life with purpose, where you feel recharged and fulfilled. And you can do just that.
First off, stop multi tasking. It doesn't work. We've talked about it before. Moms all think that they are good multi taskers. Only 2% of people can multi task. So unless you think you are part of that 2%, it's time for you to get focused. Do one task at a time. You will get any project done much quicker if you focus on it. The average person is interrupted at work every 11 minutes. I can only imagine how often the average mom is interrupted. Do your best to choose one task at a time to focus on and turn off any interruptions that you have control over (facebook, email, phone, etc).
Balance means you are trying to live in the middle. Well that's no fun. Life happens in the extremes. That's where the magic is! Instead, look for a life of purpose. You will be fueled with passion. However, when you find yourself in overwhelm (too much work or too much fun), you will need to counter balance. I spent the last few days totally immersed in getting ready for a project. Now, I will give myself a day to decompress, hang out with the kids. On the flip side, if I spend a few days totally immersed in fun with family, I know that I need to put in extra work on the other side. I am not trying to live in the middle. Burn out happens when you stay weighted on one side.
Just remember that in this balancing or juggling game, some priorities are more important than others. In the book, The One Thing, the author says..
"Balance is like juggling glass balls. All will break if you stop juggling.. except work.. work is made of rubber and will always bounce back"
